Speaker

Pierre-Henry Gagey

Former chairman of the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB), the owner of Maison Louis Jadot.

Pièrre-Henry Gagey has studied wine with his father since he was a child. He graduated from the École Supérieure de Commerce de Reims and obtained his master degree in Business Administration. This provides him a more open vision and a unique perspective of wine. In 1985, Pièrre-Henry Gagey joined the Maison Louis Jadot; in 1992, he takes over the Maison from his father and began to take charge of the winery business.

After becoming the owner, he built new cellars in Beaune and Beaujolais. With the senior winemaker Jacques Lardière, they created premium Burgundy wines with extraordinary aging potential. They focus on the extraction of natural fruit flavor, knowing that each vineyard has its own unique style and personality, and strive to make the wines reflect the characteristics of the terroir.

About the Maison

Founded in 1859, the family Louis Jadot has a history of over 150 years in Burgundy. It’s not just a famous wine merchant, its wineries have a large number of excellent vineyards in the heart of Burgundy, including the famous grands crus such as the Montrachet, the Clos Vougeot, the Corton-Charlemagne, the Musigny, the Chevalier Montrachet “Les Demoiselles”, the Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, the Bonnes Mares and the Corton Grèves, as well as the excellent premiers crus like Les Amoureuses and Clos Saint Jacques, etc.

The winery adopts a rational planting method and it’s in the transition to organic cultivation. It uses the manual picking and screening instead of the herbicide in the vineyards. Whether in the vineyard or in the wine cellar, its guiding principle is always “to give the greatest respect to the nature and to make the least interference” during the winemaking process. Most of the oak barrels used by the family Louis Jadot come from their own joint venture, Cadus, which manufactures every oak barrel in accordance with high quality and high standards of selected materials and strict age requirements for oak.

The highly respected winemaker Jacques Lardière has over 30 years of experiences and is well acquainted with the characteristics of the terroir in Burgundy’s major regions. He is in charge of  making 120-130 kinds of wines per year.

The world famous wine writer Jacky Rigaux represents the TasteSpirit, interviewed Maison Louis Jadot owner Pierre-Henry Gagey, to tell you the secrets of Burgundy wine, please see the video below:

The introduction of wines

Grand Crus

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Vougeot Grand Cru is the most special village in Burgundy. It has the Burgundy’s most important symbolic historical building, Château du Clos de Vougeot. Because of its important historical position, 50 hectares here are classified as Grand Cru, 11.7 hectares Premier Cru and 3.2 hectares as Burgundy Village. This inverted pyramid structure here are unique throughout Burgundy.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a large area, its terroir is actually not very homogeneous. There are 80 wineries in Clos Vougeot, and Maison Louis Jadot has 2.15 hectares of vineyard.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

The first cru founded by the family Louis Jadot is the delicate Clos des Ursules, but in terms of style and the vineyards, the village of Gevrey-Chambertin is the best area and the signature of the winery, and the representative wine here is Chambertin-Clos de Beze.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is one of the oldest Grands Crus in Burgundy and is known for its aging potential and masculinity. This Grand Cru and the Chambertin Grand Cru are the most important vineyards in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. They are on the same slope, which is quite steep, between 270 meters and 300 meters above sea level. Interestingly, even they’re similar vineyards, the wine from the Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a softer texture and a more delicate structure than the wine from the Chambertin Grand Cru.

The Maison Louis Jadot has 0.42 hectares of vineyard here, producing full-bodied, powerful, balanced and elegant red wines.

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

The Corton-Charlemagne and the Montrachet are the top two Burgundy white wines. The former is considered as one of the best white wine producing regions in the world. Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is located in the village of Aloxe-Corton, a rare place that can produce both top white wines and red wines in Burgundy. The Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru produced only white wines and the region covers an area of nearly 57 hectares.

A vineyard with an area of 1.6 hectares is owned by the family Louis Jadot, and it is one of the oldest vineyards here, located in the core area of Corton Charlemagne.

Premiers Crus

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques

As introduced, the Chambertin Grand Cru is the most important vineyard in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The most important premier Cru is definitely Clos Saint Jacques.

It is said that Clos Saint Jacques is one the best and the most stable Premier Cru in Burgundy. It occupies 6.7 hectares of vineyards and is located in higher sea level and south-facing slops, which helps it get more sunlight than some Grands Crus. The cool wind from Anticline valley helps grapes keep a well-balanced acidity. The various soil including clay and calcareous soil, creates balanced, delicate and varied styles of wines.

There are 5 top wineries in the Clos Saint Jacques, where the Louis Jadot stands a place.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes

Chambolle Musigny lies north of Vougeot and South of Morey Saint Denis. There are 24 Premiers Crus and 2 Grands Crus. Les Baudes Premier Cru lies just beneath the Bonnes Mares Grand Cru.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières

Puligny-Montrachet is the best village of white wine in Burgundy. Les Folatieres has the same  altitude and slopes with Montrechet and Chevalier Montrachet. It is one of the best Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre

Volnay lies in the center of the Côte de Beaune, bordered by Pommard, Monthélie and Meursault. The southeasterly exposed vineyards produce only red wines. It has 26 Premiers Crus here and Clos de la Barre is one of them. The soil is extremely thin, chalky, it is rich in calcium and creates the lightest and the most delicate wines in Volnay.

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Le Clos des Guettes

The Savigny les Beaune is in the north of the Côte de Beaune, and les Guettes is one of the south-facing vineyards here, in the heart of the Savigny les Beaune, next to the village of Savigny, 220-360 meters above sea level. The soil is chalky and rich in gravel and stones.

Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras

This Premier Cru is located at the heart of the Beaune, which has great geographical conditions. The vineyard is on a steep southeast-facing slope, about 260 meters above sea level. “Cras” means quarry in French, the soil of the vineyard is not very deep, but has a lot of stones.

Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves

Les Grèves is the largest Premier Cru vineyard in Beaune. In French, “Grèves” means sandy, small stones, which describes the soil of this vineyard.
