01 Masterclass: Tasting of 8 Grands Crusfrom Domaine Faiveley

In many people’s minds, Burgundy is the ultimate destination for wine lovers. Not only because it has many world-class domaines, but also because it’s the source of the spirit of terroir. The subtle taste of Burgundy wines and the complexities of the terroir are always fascinating and lingering.

Faiveley is a great representative of the Burgundy wine’s spirit. Faiveley was built in 1825, it is both winery (Domaine Faiveley) and negociant (Maison Faiveley), but it is more like a huge independent winery. Favieley is located in the heart of Burgundy – Nuits-Saint-Georges, it has 120 hectares of vineyards and distinguished terroir, including 10 Grands Crus and 20 Premiers Crus, and it has one of the biggest vineyards in Burgundy. Thanks to the unremitting efforts of the seven generations of the Favieley family and the huge investment they have made, the winery has been able to produce many high-quality wines, making it one of the top wineries in Burgundy.

At the 2018 International Wine Symposium, we are fortunate to invite Mr. Bernard Hervet, the authority figure in Burgundy and the present wine consultant of Faiveley. He will come to Shanghai and bring us a great horizontal tasting of Grands Crus, including the famous Echézeaux, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Mazis Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, Clos Vougeot, Latricières-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, and the monopole Grand Cru Corton Clos des Corton Faiveley.

These 8 wines of Grands Crus are all from 2014 , it is a rare opportunity for the horizontal tasting. In addition, Faiveley also provide the vintage 2009 and 2012 from Corton Clos des Corton Monopole Grand Cru for a small vertical tasting. Through the horizontal tasting and the vertical tasting, we will be able to understand the fascinating and unique charm of the Burgundy terroir. It is a master class that Burgundy fans should never miss!

Introduction of wines

Monopole Grand Cru

Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru

This wine is the flagship wine of which the winery is so proud. Clos des Cortons Faiveley has been owned by the Faiveley Family since 1874, it is one of two Burgundian Grands Crus who imprints the name of its owner ( Romanée-Conti being the other).

Echézeaux Grand Cru

Echézeaux is one of the biggest Grands Crus in Burgundy, with more than 37.69 hectares in total, in which Faiveley only owns 0.87 hectares. There are many small areas (lieux-dits) in Echézeaux who represent different quality of wines, but these areas aren’t labeled on the bottle. The area owned by the Faiveley family is very special, it is located in En Orveaux, a plot adjacent to the villages of Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

Vougeot Grand Cru is the most special village in Burgundy. It has the Burgundy’s most important symbolic historical building, Château du Clos de Vougeot. Because of its important historical position, 50 hectares here are classified as Grand Cru, with 11.7 hectares Premier Cru and 3.2 hectares Burgundy Village. This inverted pyramid structure is unique throughout the whole Burgundy.

The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a large area and its terroir is not very homogeneous. There are 80 wineries in Clos Vougeot, and Faiveley vineyard is 1.29 hectares here.

Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

In French, “Latricières” means barren. Latricières-Chambertin is in the south of Chambertin. Although they have similar structure of soil, the terrain of Latricières-Chambertin is much flatter.

The wine here is strong when it’s young, but with the mature process, it shows the spicy and gamey flavor. It’s the lightest wine among the Gevrey-Chambertin Grands Crus and it has a certain gap with the wine from Chambertin. Faiveley vineyard is 1.21 hectares in Latricières-Chambertin.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the most famous Grands Crus with a great number of wines. Most of them are softer and easier to drink than the other Grands Crus in the village, and can be drunk earlier.

The funny thing is that Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin often appeared together and have been sold under the name of Charmes-Chambertin during the past 1oo years. Regarding to the location of the vineyard, Charmes is better because it has less soil and steeper slope.

Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru

Mazis Chambertin is the northernmost grand cru of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grands Crus and is divided into Mazis-Haut and Mazis-Bas. The former has better quality and is almost the extension of the famous Chambertin Clos de Bèze to the north. It has the same rock formation, more delicate flavor, and it is closer to the Bèze in the style. It is one of the grands crus with the best quality in Geverey. The wine here has strong and powerful structure with excellent depth and aging potential. Faiveley vineyard is 1.2 hectares in this area.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is one of the oldest Grands Crus in Burgundy and is known for its aging potential and masculinity. This Grand Cru and the Chambertin Grand Cru are the most important vineyards in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. They are on the same slope, which is quite steep, between 270 meters and 300 meters above sea level. Interestingly, even they’re similar vineyards, the wine from the Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a softer texture and a more delicate structure than the wine from the Chambertin Grand Cru.The vineyard in Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is 15.4 hectares. Just a few wineries own vineyards here, in which Faiveley owns 1.29 hectares.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Clos de la Roche is the largest Grand Cru in Morey St. Denis and is also considered to be the best and the most stable vineyard. This wine is from the Maison Faiveley, which has a full, structured body and a gamey, earthy flavor, with a beautiful balance.
