Speaker

Thibault Liger-Belair

He is the sixth generation of the Liger-Belair family and the current owner of Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair, which has a large number of vineyards of top terroir.

Thibault Liger-Belair is a long-established family winery. After the gradual decline from the 18th century to the early 20th century, the sixth generation of the Liger-Belair family, Thibault Liger-Belair, took over the winery in 2001. He has established a winery and wine company named after himself, and re-opened the historic and legendary family vineyard, hoping to pass on the family’s winemaking process and business philosophy.

He has spent 6 years in vine growing and oenology, after that he worked in a company of Paris specialized in the communication around the wine business. In 2001 he took over the legendary winery and got fully involved in the production of wines. He has changed the winery’s name into his own and simultaneously created a wine merchant company TIBAULT LIGER-BELAIR.

Thibault is a staunch supporter of organic farming. He believes that “in the face of nature, we must always remember our own smallness and respect the earth.” He believes that the root of wine quality comes from the vineyard, and the key to the vineyard is careful cultivation. Under the implementation of Thibault, the winery has gained the ECOCERT certification, and is gradually implementing the Biodynamics in vineyards.

About the Winery

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has a vineyard area of 7.25 hectares, distributed in five villages in the Burgundy region, including the Vosne Romanée, the Nuits-Saint-Georges and the Gevrey Chambertin. The winery advocates the natural way. It has the ECOCERT certification and conducts the biodynamical method, with an elegant and balanced wine style, interpreting  the characteristics of terroir of each plot by its outstanding quality

TasteSpirit had visited Burgundy and discussed about the “climat in Burgundy ” with Mr. Thibault Liger-Belair.Please see the video below:

Introduction of Grands Crus

Richebourg Grand Cru

Richebourg is one of the greatest and oldest grand cru in the village of Vosne Romanée. The style of wine here is rich and full, just like its name (Riche means rich in French). It is also very elegant. This is also a grand cru known for its ageing potential. The wines here have to wait for at least 10 years to show their extraordinary charms, regardless of their vintages, and they all have at least 20 years of ageing ability.

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has a vineyard area of 0.55 hectare in Richebourg, which was planted in 1936.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Vougeot Grand Cru is the most special village in Burgundy. It has the Burgundy’s most important symbolic historical building, Château du Clos de Vougeot. Because of its important historical position, 50 hectares here are classified as Grand Cru, 11.7 hectares Premier Cru and 3.2 hectares as Burgundy Village. This inverted pyramid structure here are unique throughout Burgundy.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a large area, its terroir is actually not very homogeneous. There are 80 wineries in Clos Vougeot, and Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has 0.75 hectares of vineyard. Its grapes were planted in 1948, a long history and a rich soil structure gives the wine a full and firm structure.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

This is a selected wine merchant’s wine of Thibault Liger-Belair. Although it is not his own plot, it is cultivated by the winery. This vineyard is located on the uphill area of the Charmes-Chambertin (which has a better performance), close to the junction of the Chambertin Grand Cru and the Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, with the grape vines planted in the 1940s. In terms of the location of the vineyard, Charmes’s conditions are better, there’re less soil or stone, and the slope is steeper. This wine has a very fresh and delicious red cherry flavor. The full and fresh fruit flavor is wrapped around the clear acidity. It is very elegant and welcoming in general and can be enjoyed early, it also has a good ageing potential.

Introduction of Premieres Crus

Vosne Romanée 1er Cru “les Petits Monts”

This Premier Cru located directly above the Richebourg Grand Cru, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has a vineyard area of only 0.1 hectare here and was planted in 1954. Il often produces a very delicate and varied red wine. The wine here tastes a little like the wine from the Richebourg Grand Cru.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “les Saint Georges”

Les Saint Georges Premier Cru is the top cru of terroir in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and the entire village is named after the cru. If there were to be a Grand cru in Nuits-Saint-Georges it would be without any doubt “les Saint-Georges”. Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair is the largest vineyard’s owner here, with 2.1 hectares of vineyards, planted in 1944, producing the top Nuits-Saint-Georges red wines with a tight tannin, a rich and structured flavor and an excellent aging potential.

Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru “La Toppe au Vert”

This premier cru is from the village of Aloxe-Corton with a plot of 0.31 hectares and was planted in 1965. This is a wine merchant’s wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. It’s very elegant, pure and supple, with a long aftertaste.

Introduction of  Village Crus

Nuits-Saint-Georges “La Charmotte”

The field is next to the Aux Argilats and Aux Bousselots premier cru, where Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has 0.4 hectares of vineyard planted in 1962, producing a delicate and mineral-rich red wine.

Gevrey Chambertin “La Croix des Champs”

This field is located in the eastern part of the village of Gevery-Chambertin, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has 0.2 hectares of vineyard planted in 1964. The wine here is rich and soft, with a good aging potential.
