Ernst Loosen

Trained as an archaeologist, Ernst, Erni, Loosen is the most sought after German wine producers. His winery has more than 200 years history and is always recognized by professional magazines as one of the Germany’s top producers.

Dr.Loosen owns those of the oldest vines and the best vineyards in the Mosel region: 6 of them were already designated as Erste Lage (equivalent to grand cru) in the 1868 Prussian classification of Mosel vineyards.

The young Ernst decided to completely dedicate himself to wine in the 1980s. He completed his studies at Germany’s renowned winemaking school in Geisenheim, then travelled around the world to understand the key elements in the greatest wines.

Since Ernst took over, Dr. Loosen winery has received countless awards and has become a member of the prestigious VDP, Germany’s association of top-rated wine estates. Ernst was named Germany’s Winemaker of the Year in the 2001 edition of Gault-Millau’s Weinguide Deutschland and Decanter magazine’s Man of the Year in 2005. He was also the International Wine Challenge’s White Winemaker of the Year in 2005.
